Vittsköle

This architectural complex in the Finnish National Romantic style, located by Lake Vittsköle, was designed and built between 1902 and 1904 by three Finnish architects: Eliel Saarinen, Armas Lindgren, and Herman Gesellius. It is considered a masterpiece of Finnish architectural art. Constructed from stone and logs, the complex blends harmoniously with the surrounding natural environment of forests, lakes, and rocks, forming a perfect artistic ensemble.

As early as 1896, these three young architects opened an architectural design firm in Helsinki and began their professional collaboration. In search of a quiet working environment, in 1900, they designed and built their residences and studios by Lake Vittsköle, 30 kilometers from Helsinki. The main building that now serves as a museum was Saarinen’s former residence, and the furniture inside was also designed by him. Gesellius’s house on the other side of the garden has been converted into a restaurant and café, while Lindgren’s residence is now a hotel.
