Helsinki Zoo

Helsinki Zoo is located on Korkeasaari Island near Finland. Opened in 1889, it is the largest zoo in the country, covering an area of 22 hectares. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions near Helsinki, and visitors can choose to take a ferry or a water bus to get there.

The island where Helsinki Zoo is situated features diverse terrain, perfectly suiting the natural habitats of various animal species. The zoo is home to around 200 animal species and 1,000 plant species, ranging from Arctic tundra to tropical rainforest. A wide array of fascinating flora and fauna can be found here, including many endangered species, among which the snow leopard is the most famous. The zoo has numerous exhibits showcasing different types of animals. The Reptile House displays various snakes, reptiles, insects, and spiders; the Mammal House features quirky meerkats and striped mice; and the Africa House offers a chance to observe the rich wildlife of Africa and Asia.

Helsinki Zoo is enjoyable to visit all year round. Many Arctic species are more active in winter, but summer is ideal for seeing tropical animals. Sometimes the zoo also organizes night tours. Facilities such as restaurants, cafes, kiosks, and picnic tables are available for visitors’ convenience.
