Senate Square, Helsinki

Senate Square in Helsinki is located in the heart of the city and is one of the architectural masterpieces of the renowned architect Carl Ludvig Engel. It serves as the political, religious, scientific, and commercial center of Helsinki.

Covering an area of approximately 7,000 square meters, the square’s pavement consists of no fewer than 400,000 grayish-red Finnish round granite blocks. The columns and colonnades here rival the Corinthian style of Rome's Senate. The Helsinki Cathedral and a cluster of pale yellow surrounding buildings form the capital’s most famous architectural complex, which mainly includes the Prime Minister’s Office, the University of Helsinki, the University Library, the Supreme Court, and the City Hall. At the center of the square stands a bronze statue of Tsar Alexander II, erected in 1894 to commemorate his grant of extensive autonomy to Finland.

Many key national institutions are headquartered here, making Senate Square, in a sense, the nation’s center. Senate Square is not only the hub of civic activity in Helsinki but also hosts a variety of events. It is also the best place to admire neoclassical architecture and is regarded as one of Finland’s most important landmarks.
