Helsinki Market Square

Helsinki Market Square is the central square of Helsinki, located near the city center, with its southern end close to the Baltic Sea. It is one of the most famous market squares and tourist destinations in the area.

This is a large open-air market by the harbor and a hub for both locals and tourists. In the center of the square, there is an ancient Egyptian-style monument, erected in 1833 in honor of Tsar Nicholas I of Russia and his consort, known as the “Stone of the Empress.” The surrounding buildings date back to the 19th century and are among the few that survived World War II. The beloved Havis Amanda (also known as the Little Mermaid statue) and the fountain west of the fish market were designed in 1908 by the highly acclaimed Finnish artist Ville Vallgren.

Every morning, vendors gather at the market square, setting up stalls to sell fresh produce, seafood, flowers, and Finnish cuisine. Many stalls also offer a variety of traditional Finnish handicrafts, local specialties, and souvenirs. The nearby indoor Old Farmer’s Market sells all kinds of ingredients for Finnish dishes, creating a delightful space full of colors, aromas, and flavors. Finns are very friendly, and strolling through the market while chatting with vendors and locals is one of the best ways to experience Finnish culture. In the summer, you can even enjoy an authentic Finnish lunch here at noon.
