In Finland’s capital, Helsinki, there is a specialized design museum — the Helsinki Design Museum. It is a professional institution dedicated to the curation and preservation of Finnish design, showcasing both historical and contemporary design exhibitions, as well as organizing international exhibitions.

The museum was established in 1873 as a comprehensive educational institution for arts and crafts. In 1989, the Art and Design Museum Foundation was founded to support the museum’s activities. During World War II, the exhibits were looted by enemy forces. In 1978, the Finnish government re-established the Design Museum in a building located in the heart of Helsinki. Over time, the museum’s collection has grown increasingly rich and diverse, with its comprehensive assortment of artifacts narrating the development of Finnish design. The total collection includes approximately 75,000 items, along with 40,000 design drawings, representing the work of over 1,000 designers from various fields.

The international exhibitions organized by the museum have significant global influence. Its thematic design exhibitions showcase new products created by designers from around the world. These products, which are both practical and innovative, vividly demonstrate how design responds to the challenges brought about by global change. The museum is open from September 1 to May 31 of the following year, with hours from 11:00–20:00 on Tuesdays and 11:00–18:00 from Wednesdays to Sundays. It is closed on Mondays.
