Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865–1931) was one of the most important painters and artists in Finnish history. Tarvaspää, Gallen-Kallela’s former home and studio, has been transformed into a museum open to the public. Visiting this castle-like museum is like tracing the origins of Finnish national romanticism and returning to the era when Finnish culture began to awaken.

The former residence is situated on a hillside just outside Helsinki, overlooking the sea and the vast forests along the coast — a stunningly beautiful setting that feels like stepping into one of Gallen-Kallela’s paintings. The artist himself designed the villa in the style of Finnish national romanticism combined with European continental castle architecture. The spacious and bright studio is captivating, and climbing up the stairs, the breathtaking view over the forest and sea is simply awe-inspiring. Many rooms in the villa have been preserved as they were, allowing visitors to vividly imagine how the artist, at the peak of his creative powers, once welcomed visiting painters, writers, and politicians.
