Alvar Aalto's Former Home Museum

Alvar Aalto (March 3, 1898 – May 11, 1976), an internationally renowned Finnish architect, one of the advocates of modernist architecture and a proponent of "humanized architecture." Finland is home to two Alvar Aalto museums—one located in Helsinki, the former home museum of Alvar Aalto, and the other in Jyväskylä, the Alvar Aalto Museum.

Located in the Munkkiniemi district of Helsinki, Alvar Aalto's Former Home Museum opened to the public in 2002. His former residence and studio offer all admirers of his functionalist style a close-up glimpse into the private life of Finland’s most celebrated architect. The building was personally designed by Aalto and constructed in 1936, making it a unique architectural gem. During Aalto’s lifetime and that of his family, few outsiders had the opportunity to see this beautiful structure up close.

Since its opening, the museum has attracted a continuous stream of visitors from both Finland and abroad. The studio is bathed in sunlight, and its interior details have been preserved almost exactly as they were. Vases, lamps, and chairs bearing Aalto’s distinctive design shapes and color schemes are found throughout, creating a uniquely urban atmosphere.
