In Narinkka Square in the Kamppi district of Helsinki, the capital of Finland, stands a modern building that is the most uniquely designed, the most eye-catching, and the least church-like in appearance—but is indeed a church.

In 2008, the architectural firm K2S won a design competition initiated by the city planning office to build a church in Kamppi, and construction began in 2011. “The vision for the building was based on the theme of tranquility,” said Mikko Summanen, one of its architects. “We didn’t want the church to be disturbed by the outside world.” Visitors entering the church can focus on the most essential things—here, the atmosphere is very important. The entire structure is dominated by form and materials (spruce and alder), as well as light, together creating a sacred ambiance.

The wooden Silent Church stands out among the nearby hotels and shopping centers built with stone, metal, and glass, and its captivating wooden structure attracts thousands of passersby every day. The Silent Church offers a sanctuary where you can listen to your own soul or simply admire the inner beauty of this 70-person-capacity structure.
