Porvoo is located in the southern coastal region of Finland, 50 kilometers from the capital Helsinki, and is governed by the Uusimaa Region. It is one of Finland’s six medieval towns. The city was first mentioned in the early 14th century, making it the second oldest city in Finland, and it received city privileges in 1380.

Porvoo is known for its old town, where winding streets, narrow alleys, and low wooden houses offer a glimpse into medieval urban life and a reenactment of history. The most famous building in the old town is the medieval stone church—Porvoo Cathedral, built in the 15th century, with its oldest parts dating back to the 13th century. The cathedral is not adorned with lavish decorations or intricate carvings, yet its simplicity exudes a grand beauty. The rows of red buildings along the riverside are Porvoo’s most treasured assets, showcasing the town’s shipping history. The clear waters reflect the red wooden houses, complemented by blue skies and white clouds, creating an endlessly beautiful scenery.

Porvoo is also known as the “City of Poets,” home to many renowned Finnish poets and artists. Finland’s national poet, Johan Ludvig Runeberg, lived here from 1837 to 1877.
