The Little Mermaid statue (The Little Mermaid) is situated on the harbor rocks in Churchill Park, Copenhagen, Denmark. It is one of Copenhagen’s popular tourist spots and one of the most famous statues worldwide.

The Little Mermaid statue was commissioned in 1909 by Carl Jacobsen, son of the founder of Carlsberg, who was fascinated by a ballet based on a fairy tale. Consequently, in 1912, Danish sculptor Edward Eriksen created the statue based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, using his wife Eline Eriksen as the model.

The Little Mermaid statue was officially unveiled on August 23, 1913. First-time visitors are usually surprised by the statue’s size, as it stands only 1.25 meters tall and weighs 175 kilograms. The Little Mermaid bears some resemblance to the Pania of the Reef statue in Napier, New Zealand, and the mermaid’s story shares similarities with the Pania legend.

In 2010, the Little Mermaid statue made its first transoceanic journey, appearing at the Danish Pavilion during the Shanghai World Expo. Before the statue’s return to Denmark, a video art installation by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei was displayed at its original location.
