Frederiks Church

Frederick's Church (commonly referred to as the Marble Church) is situated in the Frederiksberg district of Copenhagen, Denmark, north of Amalienborg Palace. The church and the entire Frederiksberg district were designed by architect Nicolai Eigtved in 1740 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the House of Oldenburg ascending to the Danish throne.

Frederiks Church boasts the largest church dome in Scandinavia, spanning 31 meters, although there are three larger domes in Europe. Its design may have been inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. On October 31, 1749, King Frederick V laid the foundation stone for the church, but due to budget cuts and the death of Eigtved in 1754, construction was halted and the site remained abandoned for 150 years. Eventually, the original plan to build almost entirely out of marble was abandoned in favor of using primarily limestone.

The current church was designed by Ferdinand Meldahl and inaugurated on August 19, 1894. An inscription on the columns reads: “The word of the Lord endures forever” (1 Peter 1:25). The church is surrounded by a series of notable sculptures of theologians and church figures, including the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard.
