Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, a well-known museum in Copenhagen, Denmark, was founded in 1882. The museum takes its name from “Carlsberg,” which is naturally linked to the globally famous Carlsberg beer, as its collection primarily features the private art collection of Carl Jacobsen, the son of the brewery’s founder.

Carl had a deep passion for art and a great love for collecting various artworks, especially those from France and modern pieces, as well as ancient artifacts from the Mediterranean region. To establish an art gallery, Carl donated his art collections to the state and the Copenhagen Municipality on two separate occasions. Later, he further ensured funding for the construction of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek by establishing the New Carlsberg Foundation. Since 1953, the museum has operated independently, managed jointly by the New Carlsberg Foundation, the Copenhagen Municipality, and relevant national cultural institutions.

Today, the central area of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is a garden filled with tall palm trees and subtropical plants. Together with Roman stone sarcophagi and modern Danish sculptures, they create a harmonious artistic atmosphere. Among the museum’s rich and diverse exhibits, there are both ancient and modern artworks. The ancient artworks include sculptures from various periods ranging from ancient Egypt over three thousand years ago to the end of the Roman Empire in the fifth century. In addition, visitors can also admire modern artworks such as paintings and sculptures from Denmark and France predating the 19th century. With the financial support of the New Carlsberg Foundation, new artworks are continuously added to the museum’s collection each year.
