National Museum of Denmark

The National Museum of Denmark (National Museum of Denmark) is located in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, and is the country’s largest museum of cultural history. It mainly showcases exhibits on Danish cultural history and the cultural history of other countries. Founded on May 22, 1807, it is overseen by the Danish National Commission for the Preservation of Antiquities. The museum is housed in a Rococo-style palace built in Denmark in 1744 and was partially expanded in the 1930s. In the 1950s, parts of the museum were relocated to Brede, a suburb of Copenhagen, where the Brede Museum of the National Museum of Denmark is located. In addition, the museum manages castles, churches, monasteries, rural buildings, and Viking Age ruins and artifacts across Denmark.

Exhibits at the National Museum of Denmark include: the Danish Prehistory section, displaying artifacts from 14,000 years of Danish history, from the end of the Ice Age when humans first appeared in Denmark until the Viking Age; the Danish Middle Ages section, showcasing the period from Christianity’s triumph in Denmark to the introduction of the monarchy-political system; the Danish Folk Museum, featuring home interiors, furnishings, and clothing from various periods since the 17th century for farmers and the middle to upper classes; the Ethnographic section, displaying ethnological and folk artifacts from nearly every country outside Europe; and the Oriental and Classical Antiquities section, featuring artifacts from Egypt, Babylon, Greece, and Rome. The Royal Coin and Medal Cabinet, established during the reign of King Frederick III, has been enriched by subsequent monarchs over the centuries.
