Royal Palace of Norway

The Royal Palace of Norway is the office of King Harald and has a total of 173 rooms. It is situated on a high ground, directly opposite Karl Johans Gate, the main street in the city center. The palace is surrounded by 330 acres of woodland and parkland, and a public avenue through here leads all the way to the commercial district in the city center.

The construction of the Royal Palace of Norway was first proposed by King Carl XIV. In 1823, Danish-born architect and lawyer Hans Ditlev Franciscus von Linstow was appointed as the chief architect, and the foundation stone was laid in 1825. However, due to numerous design changes, the project was not completed until 1848, just in time for the coronation ceremony of the new King Oscar I and his French Queen Josephine. The entire palace construction showcases the grandeur of royal architecture, featuring exquisite and luxurious decorations, and has since remained the royal palace of Norway.

On regular days, when King Harald is in the palace, the Royal Standard – a flag with a red background and a golden lion – is flown above the palace. If there is a triangular cut-out on the flag, it means the king is not in residence, and Crown Prince Haakon is temporarily acting as the head of state.
