Located in the city center, Stortorvets Gjaestgiveri has been in operation since the 18th century and is considered Oslo’s oldest restaurant. In fact, just looking at its sturdy wooden furnishings paired with ornate lighting and drapes, you can easily sense its deep historical atmosphere. It is also known for serving authentic Norwegian cuisine, preserving hometown flavors passed down through the centuries.

The space is divided into a café and a restaurant. The café primarily offers traditional sandwiches and light meals, with the daily lunch special being a great deal—you can enjoy local Norwegian specialties such as smoked salmon, pork sausage, lamb sausage, and handmade dough balls for about 163 NOK. The portions are generous; for example, two women could share one order. Of course, even if you miss the lunch hour, you can stop by anytime for a light snack or a coffee and enjoy a relaxing moment.

Dining in the restaurant is a more formal and refined experience, and it is only open for dinner. White tablecloths, elegant wooden chairs, and several paintings depicting Oslo’s history create an old-world ambiance. The menu features traditional ingredients prepared with modern cooking techniques—dishes include Norwegian specialties such as herring, salmon, halibut, and trout, as well as hearty home-cooked meals like reindeer stew with mushrooms and pork tenderloin. There are also various platters of traditional fish, cured meats, and cheeses. When the weather is nice, the outdoor garden is open, adding to the pleasant dining atmosphere.
