Noodle-threading through needles and Iron Chef-style competitions showcase top culinary skills at Taiwan’s Food Expo

Taiwan’s Food Expo, which draws huge crowds scrambling for meal vouchers every year, will kick off tomorrow in Hall A of Taipei World Trade Center I. The event includes special exhibitions on the “One Prefecture, Two Towns, Three Boroughs” food culture, healthy eating concepts, and cross-strait culinary exchange skill performances. Among them, the culinary skill show will demonstrate the incredible technique of stretching noodles thin enough to thread through a sewing needle. The domestic cooking competition, known as the “Taiwanese version of Iron Chef,” will also run for four days starting tomorrow, with the top two winning teams earning spots as seed teams for the 2013 World Culinary Invitational. Additionally, hotel discounts are a major highlight this year, with participating exhibitors offering deals as steep as 73% off. Regular admission to the Food Expo is NT$250, while discounted tickets are NT$150.

The 2012 Taiwan Food Expo runs daily from tomorrow through August 20, from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. The “One Prefecture, Two Towns, Three Boroughs” food culture exhibition recreates the culinary landscape of Taiwan’s three historic cities over the past 300 years, showcasing Wanhua’s restaurant cuisine, Tainan’s traditional street snacks, and Lugang’s local pastries. For the first time, it also presents the “Feast of the Gods—King’s Banquet,” featuring 12 royal dishes along with fruit and tin carvings, offering visitors a glimpse of the banquet’s grandeur.
The cross-strait culinary skill performance will feature three master chefs from Sichuan, Shanxi, and Anhui in China, performing dazzling cooking feats across eight shows per day for a total of 32 performances over four days. Highlights include hand-pulled golden wheat noodles thin enough to fit 45 strands through a single sewing needle, and slicing meat on balloons as thin as cicada wings. The “hand-pulled golden noodles” will even be available for sampling—a rare opportunity.

Additionally, in the “LIYAL East Coast Flavors Exhibition,” three major regional cuisines will be showcased: the Seafood Delicacy Zone—“Straight from the Ocean, Taste the Freshness”; the Indigenous Cuisine Zone—“Celebrating Nature, Songs from the Tribal Kitchen”; and the Hot Spring Cuisine Zone—“A Delicious Moment, Dual Enjoyment of Hot Springs and Snorkeling.” A total of 24 tasting events are planned over four days, featuring rare hidden delicacies such as dried goby and sweet potato crackers with mountain-sea flavors, traditional dragon-phoenix swordfish rolls, Q-textured jellyfish scrambled eggs, hot spring kimchi, and Black Current noodles.
As for the highly anticipated hotel and restaurant discounts, 14 establishments including Grand Hotel Taipei, Lalu Sun Moon Lake, and Taipei Fullon Hotel are participating, offering package vouchers, waived 10% service charges, and promotions on set meals and wedding banquets, with discounts as deep as 73%.
