Located in the city center, Stortorvets Gjaestgiveri has been in operation since the 18th century and is considered Oslo’s oldest restaurant. In fact, just by looking at its sturdy wooden furnishings paired with ornate lighting and drapes, you can easily sense its deep historical ambiance. It is also known for serving authentic Norwegian cuisine, preserving the flavors of home for over a century.

The space is divided into a café and a restaurant. The café primarily offers traditional sandwiches and light meals, with the daily lunch specials being particularly good value. For about 163 NOK, you can enjoy local Norwegian specialties such as smoked salmon, pork sausage, sheep sausage, and handmade dough balls—all in generous portions. For two women, one order is often enough. Of course, even if you miss the lunch hour, you can stop by anytime for a light bite or a coffee and enjoy a relaxing moment.

Dining in the restaurant is a more formal and elegant experience, and it only serves dinner. The white tablecloths, classic wooden chairs, and several paintings depicting Oslo’s history create an old-world atmosphere. The menu features dishes that blend traditional ingredients with modern cooking techniques—such as Norwegian specialties like herring, salmon, halibut, and trout, as well as hearty home-style dishes like reindeer stew with mushrooms and pork tenderloin. There are also various platters of traditional fish, cured meats, and cheeses. When the weather is nice, the outdoor garden is open, making for an even more pleasant dining atmosphere.
