The annual Taiwan Gourmet Food Exhibition, which draws crowds scrambling for meal vouchers, will open tomorrow in Hall A of Taipei World Trade Center I. This year’s event includes special exhibitions such as the “One Prefecture, Two Towns, Three Boroughs” food culture showcase, a healthy eating concept exhibition, and cross-strait gourmet exchange culinary stunt performances. Among these, the culinary stunts will feature the extraordinary skill of stretching noodles thin enough to thread through a sewing needle eye. The domestically renowned “Taiwan version of Iron Chef” cooking competition will also run for four days starting tomorrow, with the top two winning teams qualifying as seed teams for the 2013 World Culinary Invitation Tournament. Additionally, much-anticipated hotel discounts will be offered on-site by participating businesses, with deals as deep as 73% off. General admission to the food exhibition is NT$250, while discounted tickets are NT$150.

The 2012 Taiwan Gourmet Food Exhibition runs daily from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM until August 20. This year’s “One Prefecture, Two Towns, Three Boroughs” food culture exhibition recreates the culinary landscape of Taiwan’s three historic cities over 300 years, showcasing Wanhua’s restaurant cuisine, Tainan’s traditional street snacks, and Lukang’s local pastries. It also features the “Feast of the Gods—Banquet for the King” for the first time, displaying 12 banquet dishes along with fruit and tin carvings, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of this ceremonial feast.

The cross-strait culinary stunt performances will feature three master chefs from Sichuan, Shanxi, and Anhui in China, performing dazzling culinary feats across eight shows daily for four days, totaling 32 performances. Skills on display include hand-pulled golden noodles thin enough to thread 45 strands through a single sewing needle eye, and slicing meat on balloons as thin as cicada wings. The “hand-pulled golden noodles” will even be available for sampling—a rare opportunity.

Additionally, in the “LIYAL East Coast Flavors Exhibition,” three major culinary zones will be featured: the Seafood Delights area—“Straight from the Ocean, Taste the Freshness,” the Indigenous Cuisine area—“Celebrating Nature, Songs from the Tribal Kitchen,” and the Hot Spring Cuisine area—“A Delicious Time, Double Enjoyment of Hot Springs and Snorkeling.” A total of 24 tasting events are planned over four days, including mountain-and-sea flavored dried bonito sweet potato crisps, traditional dragon-phoenix tuna rolls, chewy jellyfish omelets, hot spring kimchi, and Black Tide noodles—rare hidden-gem delicacies not often encountered.

As for the highly anticipated hotel and restaurant discounts, 14 participating businesses including the Grand Hotel Taipei, The Landis Taipei, and The Grand Formosa Regent Taipei will offer package vouchers, service fee waivers, and promotions on set menus and wedding banquets, with discounts as steep as 73%.
