Last updated 2026-11-08 — Did Norway just launch a thieves' hotel? It turns out that Oslo opened The Thief in January this year, right on the Tjuvholmen Peninsula. In the 18th century, many criminals and thieves were sent to this small island, which is why it was called "Thieves' Island," and the hotel is named after it. Did Norway just come up with a “thieves’ hotel”? It’s actually The Thief, which opened in Oslo in January this year, located right on the Tjuvholmen Peninsula. In the 18th century, many prisoners and thieves were sent to this small island, hence its nickname “Thieves’ Island,” which also gave the hotel its name. But today, in the 21st century, this place has transformed into one of the most culturally and artistically rich destinations in Scandinavia.

The Thief looks like a giant ship moored in the harbor. The building was designed by Oslo architect Mellbye Architekter, and its interior is filled with designer furniture and collectibles, almost like a small museum. The designer furnishings in the rooms come from both Norwegian and international designers. Thanks to The Thief’s long-term collaboration with the Norwegian Centre for Design and Architecture, DogA, many works by emerging Norwegian designers are also displayed in the hotel.

The hotel has a total of 119 rooms, among which The Oslo Suite spans an impressive 160 square meters. Its private rooftop terrace offers unobstructed views of the fjords, and the room also features a warm fireplace, a private bar, and a dining area, making it the most luxurious offering in the hotel. Each room is equipped with a king-size bed, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a private balcony, as well as armchairs designed by the renowned Italian designer Antonio Citterio. Even the slippers, wool blankets, and bathrobes come with designer names attached.

Next to the hotel is the newly opened Astrup Fearnley Museum, which has already attracted much attention. The surrounding streets are lined with high-end restaurants, small eateries, and art galleries, making it a cultural spot perfect for a stroll. Additionally, since the hotel is located right by the fjord, during the summer months, you can take a shuttle boat directly from the city center to reach the hotel — a surprising mode of transport that only The Thief could come up with. Moreover, the hotel plans to add the THIEF Spa in January 2014, so you can enjoy various spa treatments without even leaving your room. Even if you’re “a prisoner on Thieves’ Island” for a day, you won’t mind.
