Did Norway really open a “Thief Hotel”? It turns out to be The Thief, which debuted in Oslo in January this year. Located on the Tjuvholmen Peninsula, in the 18th century, many prisoners and thieves were sent to this small island—hence its nickname “Thief Island.” The hotel takes its name from there. But in the 21st century, this place has become one of the most culturally and artistically vibrant spots in Scandinavia.

The Thief looks like a giant ship moored in the harbor. The building was designed by Oslo architect Mellbye Architekter, and inside, the abundance of designer furniture and collectibles makes it feel like a small museum. The designer furnishings in the rooms come from Norwegian and international designers. Thanks to The Thief’s long-term collaboration with Norway’s center for design and architecture, DogA, works by many up-and-coming Norwegian designers are also displayed in the hotel.
The hotel has a total of 119 rooms, among which The Oslo Suite spans an impressive 160 square meters. Its private rooftop terrace offers unobstructed views of the fjords, and the room also features a warm fireplace, a private bar, and a dining area, making it the most luxurious offering in the hotel. Each room is equipped with a king-size bed, floor-to-ceiling windows, a private balcony, and an armchair designed by the renowned Italian designer Antonio Citterio. Even the slippers, wool blankets, and bathrobes are all custom-designed pieces.

Next to the hotel is the newly opened Astrup Fearnley Museum, which has already attracted much attention. The surrounding streets are lined with upscale restaurants, bistros, and art galleries, making it a cultural haven perfect for strolling. Additionally, since the hotel is located right by the fjord, in the summer, you can take a shuttle boat directly from the city center to reach the hotel—a surprising mode of transport that only The Thief could come up with. Moreover, the hotel plans to add the THIEF Spa in January 2014, where you can enjoy a variety of spa treatments without leaving your room—even if you’re only a “prisoner” on Thief Island for a day, you won’t mind.
