Holmenkollen

Holmenkollen is a skiing mecca in Norway. Located about 13 kilometers northeast of Oslo, it sits at an elevation of 371 meters and boasts stunning scenery. Since 1892, the world-renowned FIS Ski Jumping World Cup has been held here every first Saturday of March. It's the second-most important national celebration in Norway, after National Day, and Norwegians come together to enjoy their unique “Oslo Ski Festival.”

For passionate skiers, the name "Holmenkollen" is as familiar and revered as the Olympics. The site features the world’s most magnificent ski jumping hill, beneath which lies the world’s first illuminated artificial ski slope — a 58-meter-long track opened in 1946 and lit with vanadium lights. Athletes can take an elevator to the top of the jump tower and then leap off, performing mid-air acrobatic flips before landing and speeding away.

From a distance, if you look at the silhouette of Oslo, you’ll see the Holmenkollen Ski Jump standing prominently tall atop the hill. It also serves as a vivid symbol of this uniquely Norwegian sport. At the foot of Holmenkollen lies a ski museum that houses several pairs of skis from Norway’s Stone Age and Pottery Age, as well as equipment used by famous Norwegian explorers such as Amundsen and Nansen during their descents on Lake Besseund.
