The Henrik Ibsen Museum was established on May 23, 1990, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Ibsen’s death. This was the final residence of the renowned Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen (Henrik Ibsen), where he and his wife lived together for 11 years and completed two major masterpieces. The museum is located in Oslo, the capital of Norway, near the Royal Palace, and is one of Oslo’s premier attractions.

Henrik Ibsen was born in Skien, Norway, and is a profoundly influential Norwegian playwright, regarded as the founder of modern realistic drama. His plays exhibit a sharpness and depth in reflecting social realities that reached the pinnacle of critical realism, shaking the European theater scene of his time. His famous works include: “The League of Youth,” “The Pillars of Society,” “A Doll’s House,” “Ghosts,” “An Enemy of the People,” “Hedda Gabler,” “The Wild Duck,” and others.

The Henrik Ibsen Museum is a red wooden house, which stands out vividly against the surrounding lush green farmland. The building and its surroundings remain exactly as they were in Ibsen’s time. Inside the museum, visitors can see portraits and photographs of Ibsen from different periods, as well as photos of his plays performed around the world. The museum also displays some of his personal belongings.

Ibsen’s study is the most furnished and highly protected area, visible only through a glass door—visitors can look but not enter. On the left wall of his desk hangs a large portrait. Interestingly, the figure in the painting is neither a relative nor a friend of Ibsen, but his rival—Swedish contemporary literary giant August Strindberg. The witty old Ibsen, upon seeing the portrait every day upon entering his study in his later years, would think about how to outdo his competitor.
