The ancient city suffered severe destruction by Muslims in the late 10th century but was completely rebuilt in the 11th century. The ancient city of Santiago features various Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque buildings, making it one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The oldest monuments in the city are located around the tomb of Saint James and the church that houses his relics.

The Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela was declared the first European Cultural Itinerary by the European Parliament. It crosses the French and Spanish borders and has been a pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela since ancient times. Along the way, there are 1,800 buildings, both religious and secular, of significant historical importance. This route played a crucial role in promoting cultural exchange between the Iberian Peninsula and other parts of Europe during the Middle Ages, and it also stands as a testament to how Christian faith conquered people of all social classes and across all of Europe. In 1985, UNESCO declared the ancient city of Santiago de Compostela as part of the World Heritage.
