The Roman Walls of Lugo

The ancient Roman walls of Lugo are situated in the capital city of the Province of Lugo in the autonomous community of Galicia in northwestern Spain, along the Miño River. Built in the late 3rd century AD, the Roman walls were constructed to protect the Roman town of Lucus, which belonged to the Roman Empire. To reinforce defenses, the city was enclosed by walls in the 2nd century. These walls are made of massive slate blocks, stretching approximately 2,000 meters in length and standing about 10 meters high. The full circular wall remains remarkably well-preserved to this day and stands as one of the finest examples of late Roman imperial fortifications in Western Europe.
