Lugo

Lugo is located in the autonomous community of Galicia in northwestern Spain. It is the capital of the Province of Lugo and the fourth-largest city in Galicia. It is the only city in the world entirely surrounded by an intact Roman wall. This weathered wall has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and in 2008 was united in a symbolic bond with China’s Great Wall.

The Roman walls of Lugo were built in the late 3rd century AD from massive slate blocks. Stretching approximately 2,000 meters in length and standing around 10 meters high, the circular wall remains remarkably well-preserved to this day, making it one of the finest examples of late Roman imperial fortifications in Western Europe. In addition to the Roman walls, Lugo boasts numerous other well-preserved historic buildings, including a cathedral dating back to the 12th century, as well as the City Hall and Bishop’s Palace built in the 18th century. The cathedral is the most distinctive among them. Constructed over several centuries, its architecture blends features from different periods, combining Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance styles into a sacred and beautiful ensemble.

The most famous festival in Lugo is the annual traditional Saint Froilan Festivity, held from October 4 to 12. It is both a religious event and a large local fair, attracting visitors even from neighboring provinces.
