Moon Over Lugou Bridge at Dawn
Moon Over Lugou Bridge at Dawn is one of the famous Eight Views of Yanjing. Lugou Bridge is located southwest of Guang’anmen in Beijing, spanning the Yongding River. In ancient times, Emperor Qianlong once passed by the bridge in autumn. In 2000, the government made efforts to restore the water surface of Xiaoyue Lake but ultimately had to abandon the project due to water shortages. During that time, they also attempted to use high-tech methods to create an artificial moon by the lake, which could not compare to the natural wonder of "three moons in one day." In May 2008, the Fengtai District government initiated a water storage project for the Yongding River, which included restoring the water surface of Xiaoyue Lake. This time, the restoration used discarded water from pipeline flushing during the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, which began being injected into Xiaoyue Lake on July 1, 2008. On July 20, as the final 20,000 cubic meters of discarded pipeline-flushing water from the Beijing-Shijiazhuang section of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project flowed into Xiaoyue Lake, the lake, which had been dry for 20 years, finally had the conditions to reflect the moon on its waters. The "Moon Over Lugou Bridge at Dawn" spectacle was successfully revived during the Mid-Autumn Festival in 2008.
