Mount Nero
Located within the city of Wiesbaden, Germany, Mount Nero is a favorite spot for outings. The 245-meter-high peak and the adjacent slopes covered with sprawling vineyards create a perfect environment for relaxation.
Riding the Nerobergbahn funicular, constructed in 1888, is a fascinating experience in itself. The two cable cars, with no electric power, move up and down in opposite directions using water gravity. The railway spans 440 meters, covering an elevation difference of 80 meters. From April to October each year, the water-powered cable car runs every 15 minutes, shuttling passengers between the mountain base and the summit.
In 1851, a domed belvedere with columns was built at the top of Mount Nero. From this vantage point, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Wiesbaden and Mainz, and on clear days, even catch sight of the distant Taunus Mountains. Not far from the belvedere, at the foot of the mountain, lies the Opelbad bathhouse, built in 1934. Its unique location attracts visitors from across the Rhine-Main region who come to see what is hailed as “Wiesbaden’s most beautiful open-air bath.”
The 3-kilometer-long forest belt on Mount Nero offers endless enjoyment for nature lovers and hikers. There’s also a “tree climbing forest” where, under the guidance of climbing experts, visitors can experience the thrill of scaling trees.
