Shanxi Geological Museum

The Shanxi Geological Museum is affiliated with the Department of Natural Resources of Shanxi Province. Located on Binhe West Road in Taiyuan City, north of Yingze Bridge, it neighbors the Shanxi Museum, Taiyuan Library, and China Coal Museum. Covering an area of 31,000 square meters with an exhibition space of 11,811 square meters, it officially opened to the public on May 1, 2017. It is the only professional science and technology museum in Shanxi Province dedicated to popularizing knowledge about mineral resources and earth sciences. The museum houses a rich and diverse collection of over 51,000 items, featuring locally unique rocks, minerals, paleontological fossils, as well as mineral treasures from around the world. Its specimens are abundant, varied, rare, and distinctive. Among them, fossils such as the Shanxiichthyosaurus and Wang’s Phytosaur, excavated and preserved here, are unique in the world.

Development History:

In 1958, the Shanxi Geological Department Geological Museum was established. It was renamed the Shanxi Geological and Mineral Resources Bureau Geological and Mineral Exhibition Hall in 1982, the Shanxi Geological and Mineral Science and Technology Museum during the 1995 government restructuring, and the Shanxi Geological Museum in April 2014. It officially opened to the public for free on May 1, 2017.

Venue Layout:

The architectural design of the museum adopts the traditional Chinese concept of “round sky and square earth.” The lower part of the building resembles a “treasure box” built from natural boulders, draped with a grid-like “beaded curtain,” symbolizing the vastness of space in all directions. The upper exhibition hall is flat and round, shaped like a “jade bi” disk hovering in the air, symbolizing the endless cycle of time. The concept of “round sky and square earth” represents time and space in architectural philosophy, while also carrying the auspicious meaning of “a perfect match.”

Exhibition Themes:

Since ancient times, Shanxi has been known as a land of “mountains and rivers both inside and out.” This phrase first appeared in *Records of the Grand Historian* (*Shiji*), originating from *Zuo Zhuan*: “If we win the battle, we will surely gain the allegiance of the feudal lords. Even if we do not win, with mountains and rivers surrounding us both inside and out, there will be no harm.” It means that with mountains outside and rivers inside, the terrain is ideal for both offense and defense. Its eastern boundary is the majestic 800-li (400 km) Taihang Mountain Range, forming a natural barrier between the Loess Plateau and the North China Plain. To the west is the Jin-Shaan Grand Canyon, which cuts through the Loess Plateau from north to south, guiding the Yellow River down from the Inner Mongolia grasslands in a mighty rush. “Mountains and rivers both inside and out” vividly summarizes Shanxi’s geographical features, which also serve as the foundation and subject of geological science.

Exhibition System:

The Shanxi Geological Museum boasts a comprehensive exhibition system, summarized as “one main line and two focal points.” The “main line” is a rotating thematic exhibition route consisting of four themed exhibition halls arranged in a spiral ascending order: “Through Time and Space,” “Ancient Species,” “Earth’s Treasures,” and “Nature’s Finest.” These galleries respectively showcase Shanxi’s geological history, biological evolution, mineral resource wealth, and the essence of minerals and rocks. The “two focal points” are two special exhibitions: “Mapping the World” and “Clothing the Nation,” which introduce the development and scientific achievements of surveying and mapping in Shanxi, as well as an overview of land resource management and development.

Museum Collections:

Most of the museum’s paleontological collections were discovered and excavated by staff of the Shanxi Museum within the province. These include stegosaur and Yungangosaurus fossils unearthed in Zuoyun County, the upper jawbone and dentary fossils of Tarbosaurus found in Tianzhen County, the Shanxiichthyosaurus fossil from Ji County, the Wang’s Phytosaur fossil from Yushe County, and the large-lipped rhinoceros fossil from Xing County. Among these, the “treasure of the museum,” the Shanxiichthyosaurus fossil specimen, is the only one in the world that is the most complete and rare, holding significant scientific value for the study of the Chinese Kannemeyeriiformes fauna. Another important exhibit is a 425-gram piece of “fool’s gold,” hailed by experts as the “Number One Gold of North China.” Its formation and discovery process are also filled with legendary tales.

Dome Theater:

The dome theater is an iconic structure within the Shanxi Geological Museum. Its main body is a 20-meter-diameter sphere supported by reinforced concrete columns, suspended in the core area of the museum building. It is the first suspended concrete spherical theater in China. The interior is equipped with high-tech hardware facilities that create a 360-degree holographic visual spectacle, making audiences feel as though they are voyaging through the vast universe, surrounded by dreamlike stars. It offers a comfortable viewing experience.

Public Services:

The Shanxi Geological Museum is open to the public free of charge. Visitors can make reservations in advance or obtain free admission tickets on-site with valid identification on the day of the visit. Opening hours are from 9:00 to 17:00 from Tuesday to Sunday (entry stops at 16:00). Guided tour services can be reserved two days in advance by calling 0351-4069643. The museum also offers free Wi-Fi, and visitors can access self-guided audio tours by following the official WeChat and Weibo accounts of the Shanxi Geological Museum.

Organizational Structure:

The Shanxi Geological Museum comprises 19 departments, including the Office, Party-Mass Department, Supervision Office, Human Resources Department, Finance Department, Planning Office (Data Storage Office), Information Office, Supervision Office, Archives Office, Physical Geological Data Office, Review Office I, Review Office II, Geoscience Research Office (Science Popularization Base Office), Paleontology Research Office (Academician Workstation), Specimen Management Department (Operations Coordination Department), Exhibition and Education Department, Public Service Department, Logistics and Equipment Department, and Security Department. In addition, the museum is equipped with advanced facilities for building automation, security technology prevention, fire monitoring, and electronic ticketing to ensure safe operations.

As the inheritor, pioneer, and guide of Shanxi’s geoscience culture, the Shanxi Geological Museum, as a public welfare institution, prioritizes social benefits and public needs. With the goal of building a “Beautiful Geological Museum,” it strives to become a true “temple of geological display, classroom for students, and paradise for visitors” by focusing on “smiling service to promote Shanxi’s land resources, technological innovation to support land and resource development, information leadership to strengthen mining data sources, and cultural enrichment to build a strong talent team.” The museum contributes actively to the construction of socialist spiritual civilization and the development strategy of a culturally strong Shanxi.
