Stargazing in Alishan: Summer Nights under the Milky Way

Look up at the starry sky! In the cool air of Mount Ogasawara and the refreshing alpine botanical garden, you can have a serene, otherworldly conversation with the stars scattered across the night sky. The Chiayi Forest District Office of the Forestry Bureau will hold two sessions of the "YU-GU-WA-SU Ecological Activity" on August 6–7 and 20–21, 105, giving the public a chance to experience the natural ecology and high-altitude night skies of Alishan.

YU-GU-WA-SU refers to the blessing ceremony originally performed by the Tsou tribe when entering the mountains. The phrase "YU-GU-WA-SU" carries the meaning of wishing those who enter the mountains smooth breathing. The activity begins in the Zhulv Community of Fanlu Township, where participants learn about the Tsou indigenous people’s respectful attitude toward the earth, starting with an entrance ceremony and tribal tour. Then they head up to Alishan, where professional instructors guide them to explore Alishan’s rich ecological environment, teach natural observation methods, and help them understand biodiversity and conservation concepts.

Witness the magnificent sunrise, sea of clouds, and forests of Alishan. On a mountain free from light pollution, you may also catch a glimpse of the Milky Way. Summer is the best time of year to view the Milky Way, and from the viewing platform on Mount Ogasawara, the galaxy is clearly visible—like a pale white ribbon draped along the ridgeline of Mount Yushan.

To ensure safety and enhance the stargazing experience, travelers should dress warmly and are advised to bring small flashlights wrapped in red cellophane. This allows for safe route illumination without causing pupil constriction that could interfere with stargazing.
