German-Russian Museum

The German-Russian Museum is the site where Germany signed the unconditional surrender on the evening of May 8, 1945, marking the end of World War II. The building that houses the museum was constructed between 1936 and 1938 and originally served as an officers' casino for the German Army Engineers' School. In late April 1945, during the Battle of Berlin, the Soviet Fifth Shock Army used the site as its headquarters and set up camp here. Because the building remained almost entirely undamaged during the war, it was chosen as the location to accept the German surrender.

After the war, the building served as the official residence for the Soviet military administration in Germany and later housed other Soviet military services. From 1967 to 1994, it was converted into a museum exhibiting the history of the Soviet capture of Berlin and the German surrender. After the Soviet withdrawal from Berlin, it became the German-Russian Museum, reflecting the end of Nazi rule. The three-story museum has 16 exhibition rooms with over 15,000 exhibits and documents. One particularly notable exhibit is the room where the surrender was signed, preserved as it was at the time, and featuring the original German, English, and Russian versions of the unconditional surrender document. The outdoor courtyard also displays several wartime tanks, trucks, and other artifacts.
