Travelers who love experiencing carnivals around the world, take note！ The Berlin Carnival of Cultures, one of the world’s top 10 festive celebrations, is set to take place from May 17 to 20, with the most anticipated costume parade happening from 12:30 PM to 9:00 PM on May 19. This annual celebration draws over 1.5 million people to the German capital every year. Combining music, dance, costume parades, and food stalls, this cultural carnival is a world-class event not to be missed in May.

Let’s rewind to 1995, the year before the first Berlin Carnival of Cultures was held — also the year when plans were underway to create one of the world’s top 10 carnivals. With over 13% of Berlin’s population coming from diverse ethnic backgrounds, the city was rich in multicultural resources. However, at the time, Germany was grappling with the aftermath of reunification, facing political shifts and an economic downturn. This led to increased social tensions among its diverse communities, with foreigners often becoming targets of blame, sparking widespread public discourse. To bridge ethnic divides, foster cultural tolerance, and promote understanding, the 1996 Berlin Carnival of Cultures was born on May 16, born out of participation by global artists based in Berlin and inspired by traditional carnival concepts.

During the inaugural carnival, over 2,000 participants from 50 costume parade groups showcased their ethnic identities and creative flair through a riot of colors, attracting more than 50,000 spectators. Today, the German Carnival of Cultures has grown into a global celebration, drawing over a million visitors to Berlin each year to enjoy this unique arts and culture event. Featuring distinctive international cuisines and global cooking styles, along with live music and dance performances, the lively and joyful atmosphere makes the German capital a global focal point during this time.

This year’s grand parade featured a total of 80 groups and around 4,800 participants, whose vibrant costumes turned Berlin’s Kreuzberg district into the world’s most beautiful cultural palette. The passionate dances paired with a variety of musical performances, along with uniquely prepared international cuisines, made this the most spectacular global cultural party even more captivating.
