This annual carnival event draws over 1.5 million visitors to Germany’s capital each year. Looking back to 1995, the year before the first Berlin Carnival of Cultures and the year that laid the foundation for one of the world’s top ten carnivals. With over 13% of Berlin’s residents coming from diverse ethnic backgrounds, the German capital had long been rich in multicultural resources. However, at the time, Germany was grappling with the aftermath of reunification—whether it was political shifts or economic downturns—the diversity among its people had led to increasing social tensions. Immigrants became scapegoats, sparking widespread public discourse. To bridge ethnic divides and promote understanding and appreciation of different cultures, local artists from around the world joined forces with the concept of a carnival, giving birth to the Berlin Carnival of Cultures on May 16, 1996.

During the inaugural carnival, over 2,000 participants from 50 costume parade groups showcased their ethnic identities and cultural creativity with vibrant colors, attracting more than 50,000 spectators. Today, the German Carnival of Cultures has grown into a global celebration, drawing over a million visitors to Berlin each year to enjoy this unique arts and culture event. Exotic cuisine and global cooking styles, along with live music and dance performances, create a lively and joyful atmosphere that turns the German capital into the center of global attention during this time.

This year’s grand parade will feature about 4,800 participants from 80 groups. Their colorful outfits will transform Berlin’s Kreuzberg district into the world’s most beautiful cultural palette. Energetic dances, live instrumental performances, and uniquely prepared international cuisines will make this largest cultural party on Earth even more spectacular.
