Germanisches Nationalmuseum

The Germanisches Nationalmuseum is located in Nuremberg, Germany. Founded in 1852, it is one of the largest museums in Germany and all of Europe, housing a total of 1.2 million exhibits. The museum was established in 1852 by a Franconian baron and was built upon the foundations of a medieval monastery. After the establishment of the German Empire in 1871, the museum naturally became Germany's national museum.

The exhibits at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum are extremely rich, including artifacts and artworks from the Stone Age to the modern era. In fact, the content of the museum is not limited to Germany alone; cultural relics from the entire German-speaking Germanic region are part of its collection. It has 17 permanent exhibition halls, and a thematic exhibition composed of 20,000 items showcases the development of German culture—from stone-age hand axes to the famous artwork “Felt Suit” by contemporary German artist Joseph Beuys. In addition to the permanent exhibitions, the museum frequently organizes thematic exhibitions about German culture.

In fact, the Germanisches Nationalmuseum is not just an exhibition space—it functions more like a research center. Beyond the exhibition halls, it also includes a historical archive, an art archive, and a collection of paintings and prints. Its publicly accessible library houses 500,000 volumes on European art and cultural history. The museum also has 15 specialized workshops dedicated to the maintenance and restoration of artworks. These workshops not only maintain the museum’s own collections but also provide practical training opportunities in artifact preservation for interns from applied science universities. The museum also has two art education centers and a publication bearing the same name as the museum.
