The concept of scenic routes originated in Germany, starting with the German Alpine Road and Romantic Road in the 1950s. Today, Germany boasts over 150 scenic routes, each with a unique theme, showcasing the diverse cultural facets of Germany to the world. Among them, the Romantic Road, Castle Road, Fairy Tale Road, and Fantastische Straße are the most renowned and beloved by travelers.

The Romantic Road is considered Germany’s most classic travel route. In the 1950s, to promote tourism in southern Germany, the government connected 26 towns, stretching 350 kilometers from Würzburg on the Main River, through the medieval towns of Rothenburg, Nördlingen, and Augsburg, all the way to Füssen in the Alps.

 

Along the way, countless splendid palaces, majestic castles, exquisite churches, and solemn monasteries await. Delving into their stories reveals a vivid tableau of medieval aristocratic grandeur. The UNESCO-listed Würzburg Residence and the dreamy Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles are located along this route.

 

The elegant, tranquil old towns and the leisurely, rustic countryside scenery make this route especially captivating. The stunning landscapes along the way form a mesmerizing tapestry, adding even more romance and legend to the Romantic Road’s fame.

 

 

In the corner of every childhood memory, there’s often a cherished tale of princesses and princes. Familiar fairy tales like "Snow White," "Sleeping Beauty," and "Cinderella" have accompanied countless children as they grew up, and their authors are the famous Brothers Grimm.

 

The German government connected the birthplaces, upbringing, education, and folklore research locations of the Brothers Grimm into a Fairy Tale Road. It starts in Hanau, the birthplace of the Grimm Brothers, passing through Marburg, Kassel, Göttingen, Hamelin, and ending in Bremen to the north, spanning approximately 600 kilometers.

 

You’ll discover that the towns and mountain villages from Grimm’s fairy tales—the worlds of princes, princesses, dwarfs, and witches—actually exist in real life. Back when Germany was a patchwork of principalities, the feudal system created stark divides between the wealthy nobility and impoverished commoners, giving rise to folk tales of commoners marrying princesses, princesses in distress, and stepmothers mistreating children, reflecting societal injustices. Thus, a journey along the Fairy Tale Road is also one of the best ways to understand German society.

 

Located in the state of Baden-Württemberg, the Fantastische Straße winds through the Neckar Valley, the Black Forest, and the Swabian Jura, stretching over 400 kilometers. Its serene and picturesque scenery lives up to its name, as if fairies with fluttering wings could appear at any moment. The route starts in Heidelberg by the Neckar River, heading southeast to the automotive city of Stuttgart and southwest to the aristocratic spa destination of Baden-Baden. The two paths converge in Calw, the hometown of the world-famous writer Hermann Hesse.

 

Continuing southward, past the charming town of Tübingen, you’ll reach the majestic Hohenzollern Castle. The route then ends at Meersburg and Konstanz by Lake Constance, where the poetic scenery is utterly captivating. Strolling through the forests and lakeshores feels like time has come to a standstill.

Castle Road is an east-west traveling route, starting in Mannheim and winding along the ancient towns and castles along the Neckar River. It curves toward Rothenburg on the Romantic Road, then continues eastward through Ansbach, Nuremberg, Bamberg, Coburg, Bayreuth, and finally reaches the Czech capital, Prague. Counting them up, Castle Road features an astonishing 77 castles, most of which retain their original medieval charm or are beautifully reconstructed originals.

 

Overall, Castle Road focuses on medieval castles as its highlight, while also offering the serene rural scenery along the Neckar, Kocher, and Tauber Rivers. Especially in the early stretches of the route, the road follows the Neckar Riverbanks, where forests and open fields are dotted with striking castles. Known as the Romantic Streets of the Neckar Valley, this section rivals the Rhine in charm.
