Five new cruise ships added to the Nile, including the former royal vessel of Egypt’s King Farouk, the most luxurious

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has launched five new cruise ships on the Nile in Egypt: the SS Misr, formerly the royal yacht of Egypt’s former King Farouk; the boutique luxury sailboat Mövenpick SB Feddya; the long-haul cruise ship Mövenpick MS Hamees; and the newly introduced Mövenpick MS Darakum and Mövenpick MS Sunray. With these additions, the Swiss premium hotel group Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts now operates a fleet of eight cruise ships on the Nile, making it the largest international cruise operator on the river.

The SS Misr is the flagship of the Movenpick Hotels & Resorts cruise fleet. The SS Misr is a “time capsule” from the era of King Farouk, built in England nearly a century ago. In 1938, it became the private yacht of King Farouk and was used exclusively for celebrating the king’s birthday. The ship retains numerous items from King Farouk’s time, such as gramophones, telephones, and radios, as well as letters written by King Farouk to his mother. Meanwhile, the Mövenpick SB Feddya reinterprets the charm of Egypt’s traditional sailboat, the “dahabeya,” and is also the only dahabeya on the Nile that offers 24-hour butler and laundry services in all suites.

After an 18-year hiatus, long-distance cruises have returned to the Nile. Starting April 2013, Movenpick Hotels & Resorts will launch the Movenpick MS Hamees cruise journey, passing through Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan. This long-haul cruise spans 14 nights, including over 80 hours of sailing between Cairo and Aswan, plus an additional 12 hours navigating upstream to several scenic sites, ultimately arriving in Luxor. The cruise offers an in-depth exploration of lesser-known Egyptian historical sites and temples, including the Hawara Pyramid of Amenemhat III, the tomb of Ishedora, and Tell el-Amarna, which served as the ancient capital of Egypt during the reign of Pharaoh Akhenaten.
