Celebrate the holidays in Europe: The Nuremberg Christmas Market lights up for a whole month

As Christmas approaches, famous Christmas markets across Europe begin to deck the halls in celebration of the festive season. Germany’s Christmas markets have a history spanning hundreds of years, and Nuremberg is one of the oldest and most renowned. The entire event runs for nearly a month, and this year it will take place in the central square from November 30 to December 24.

Nuremberg was once the imperial city of the Holy Roman Emperor and reached the height of its economic prosperity during the Middle Ages. During World War II, Hitler gave speeches here, and after the war, the Allied forces conducted the “Nuremberg Trials” against the Nazis, all of which contributed to its fame. Now, the smoke of war has long dissipated, and Nuremberg is once again known internationally for its Toy Fair and Christmas market.

 

The old town of Nuremberg is still surrounded by walls built in the 13th century. The streets once bustling with horse-drawn carriages have become pedestrian zones. The Imperial Castle perched on the hillside bears witness to Nuremberg’s historical significance and adds to the charming medieval ambiance of the ancient city. At the Frauenkirche, an impressive clock tower show takes place every day at exactly 12 noon, depicting the seven Prince-Electors pledging allegiance to Emperor Charles IV. The “Golden Bull” issued by Charles IV stipulated that the emperor was to be elected by the seven Prince-Electors, thereby establishing their status and privileges.

The central square in front of the Frauenkirche is home to a lively market on regular days, and during special holidays like Christmas, a grand Christmas market is held. This year, the square will also host a bustling Christmas market, with a variety of stalls spread across the area selling traditional Christmas handicrafts, as well as numerous food stalls offering gingerbread, sweets, grilled meats, and more. By then, the whole square will be filled with enticing aromas and lively energy.
