St. Sebaldus Church

St. Sebaldus Church is a medieval church in Nuremberg, Germany, and the oldest of the city’s three major churches, predating both St. Lorenz and St. Mary's Church. It is located on Albrecht Dürer Platz, opposite the Town Hall, and is named after Nuremberg’s patron saint — the 8th-century hermit and missionary St. Sebaldus. Since the Reformation, it has been a Lutheran church.

St. Sebaldus Church was originally built in the 1330s as a Romanesque hall church with two choirs. Over the course of the 14th century, significant structural changes were made to the church. These included the widening of the aisles, the raising of the spire between 1309 and 1345, and the construction of the late Gothic hall choir from 1358 to 1379. In the 15th century, two towers were added. By the mid-17th century, the interior had been redesigned in the Baroque style. The church suffered extensive damage during World War II and was gradually restored afterward. Fortunately, some historic features such as the Shrine of St. Sebaldus and the church’s stained glass windows have been preserved.

The church houses two organs: one installed in the 14th century and another in the 15th. The main organ was built between 1440 and 1441 and remained one of the world’s oldest playable organs until it was damaged in the 20th century. As an important historical church in Nuremberg, it is now a key tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world.
