Nuremberg Zoo

Nuremberg Zoo is located in the "Lorenz Forest Kingdom" on the southeastern edge of Nuremberg city. Opened to the public on May 11, 1912, the 170-acre park is home to about 300 animal species and a total of 2,600 animals. Every year, around one million visitors come to explore the zoo’s beautiful landscape along its walking trails, featuring vast forests and meadows dotted with ponds, as well as former quarries that have been transformed into spacious, almost open enclosures.

Many hoofed mammals from Africa and Europe thrive here, such as giraffes, zebras, bison, and deer. The dolphin exhibit at Nuremberg Zoo is the only one of its kind in southern Germany, where dolphins and sea lions leap gracefully out of the water. How are these animals trained? Are dolphins really that intelligent? Come here to find out. Other highlights include the reconstructed 2,000-square-meter gorilla habitat, large enclosures for wild felines, and the newly built polar bear enclosure, which is home to adorable bear cubs born in late 2010.

Nuremberg Zoo is especially committed to species conservation programs and the protection of endangered species. In 1992, the zoo founded the Yaqu Pacha association, dedicated to protecting aquatic mammals and their habitats in South America.
