Maracaibo is located on the shores of Lake Maracaibo in northwestern Venezuela. It is the country’s second-largest city after the capital, Caracas, and the capital of Zulia State. The city is one of the world’s most renowned centers of the petroleum industry and a major oil-exporting port.

Maracaibo is also known as the “Little Venice.” This nickname originated when an expedition team visited the area and found that the scenery along Lake Maracaibo and the stilt houses of the indigenous people closely resembled those of Venice, Italy. The culture of Maracaibo is unique, influenced by local Spanish bagpipes, the desert climate, traditions, and customs—elements reflected in the region’s architecture. The city's buildings are notably distinctive, with numerous well-preserved structures from the 17th and 18th centuries standing alongside modern high-rises, creating a truly unique urban landscape.

Lake Maracaibo is the largest lake in South America and the most popular tourist destination in Maracaibo. It is also one of the most oil-rich lakes in the world. From afar, the lake is dotted with drilling rigs, and the entire area has more than 7,000 oil wells producing over 70 million tons of crude oil annually.
