Maracay

Maracay is located in north-central Venezuela, near the Caribbean coast, and is the capital and most important city of Aragua State. The city was founded in 1701 and takes its name from a local indigenous chief, meaning "young tiger." It experienced rapid development during the rule of Juan Vicente Gómez.

As one of Venezuela’s most important cities, Maracay is a key industrial and commercial hub, producing goods such as paper and textiles, as well as items like perfume, soap, and cattle. To the north of Maracay lie numerous high mountains, which separate the city from the sea and form Henri Pittier National Park. Established in 1937, the park spans 1,078 square kilometers, with its highest point reaching an elevation of 2,436 meters, making it one of Venezuela’s most popular national parks. Other notable attractions in Maracay include Maracay Cathedral, the Lourdesia Zoo, and the Maracay Air Museum.
