St. John's Parish Church

St. John's Parish Church is the first church of St. John, built in 1836 on a cliff overlooking the East Coast. It was constructed to replace the original church, which was completely destroyed by a hurricane in 1831. The churchyard is the burial site of Ferdinando Paleologus — a descendant of Emperor Constantine, whose family was driven out of Constantinople by the Turks. Ferdinando died in Barbados in 1678, after having lived on the island for over 20 years. St. John's Parish Church is built in the Gothic style and houses a sculpture of Mary Wismarcott. Nowadays, many visitors come to see the first church of St. John, which boasts a long history and a Gothic architectural style that gives the church a strong religious atmosphere.
