Windmills always bring back the innocence of childhood, and dreamy windmill towns seem to transport you into a fairy-tale slumber. Travel site HowToTrip has compiled five of the world’s most captivating windmill destinations, including one right here in Taiwan. At sunset, golden hues softly illuminate the lush green fields, creating a scene reminiscent of a European painting.

1. Schiedam, Netherlands
When it comes to windmill culture, none is more famous than the windmill town of Schiedam in the Netherlands. The town not only boasts the world’s largest windmill but is also the birthplace of gin.

2. Barbados, Caribbean
Located in the Caribbean island of Barbados in North America, this small island is home to the Morgan Lewis Sugar Windmill, which was listed as a World Cultural Monument by the World Monuments Fund in 1996.

3. De-Yuan Pi Dutch Village, Tainan
Taiwan’s first Dutch-style windmill is located in Liuying’s De-Yuan Pi. The De-Yuan Pi Dutch Village not only offers beautiful scenery with vast grasslands and expansive ponds, but also features the country’s first Dutch windmill. It creates a charming rural windmill atmosphere, making you feel as if you’ve stepped into the countryside of the Netherlands.

4. Ballycopeland, Northern Ireland
The Ballycopeland Windmill is situated in the western part of the small village of Millisle in County Down, Northern Ireland. This conical windmill has become the most prominent landmark in the area and is also the only operational windmill left in the district.
