Introduction Boeng Kak Lake is to Phnom Penh what West Lake is to Hangzhou. It maintains a delicate distance from the bustling city—untainted by its restlessness yet not entirely cut off from the world. Whether for locals or travelers, sitting by the lake and watching the sunrise or sunset is a perfect way to unwind. On the eastern shore of Boeng Kak Lake, there are many guesthouses facing the water. Although they tend to be on the pricier side, if your budget allows, staying here is highly recommended—at the very least, enjoy dinner at a lakeside restaurant and sip on a fresh fruit juice. It’s a rare moment of leisure during your trip to Cambodia. Dining / Accommodation / Shopping Accommodation Recommendations: There are numerous guesthouses around Boeng Kak Lake set in exceptionally scenic locations. Many are built on stilts over the water, reminiscent of Ko Pha-Ngan in Thailand. Floating Island: US$5–10 per room. The upper floors offer rooms with lake views, allowing you to easily enjoy sunlight and fresh air. The terrace here is the most breezy in town, and there’s also a two-story bar where you can sip drinks while watching the sunset. Simon’s II Guest House: US$10–15 per room. The entire villa looks like a giant wedding cake, and its rooms are the trendiest on Boeng Kak Lake, including hot showers. Transportation: A motorbike ride from the city center costs around 1,000 riels.
