Liuzigou Valley of Tianlong Mountain

Tianlong Mountain, originally named Fangshan, is a branch of the Lüliang Mountain Range, standing at an elevation of 1,700 meters. It is located 36 kilometers southwest of Taiyuan and 14 kilometers from the Jinci Scenic Area, with a dedicated highway connecting the site. The mountain features towering peaks cloaked in dark green hues, shaded by lush pine and cypress trees, with streams murmuring through valleys and a cool climate. As early as the Eastern Wei Dynasty, Gao Huan built a summer palace here, and during the Northern Qi Dynasty, Emperor Gao Yang constructed Tianlong Temple, where both figures also commissioned cliffside grottoes. The mountain gained its name from the temple, and the temple became famous for its caves. Since then, Tianlong Mountain has risen to prominence. The Tianlong Mountain scenic area encompasses three natural villages—Wupo, Nanping, and Yaotou—in Jinci Town, as well as Nanshan and Beishan (i.e., Tianlong Mountain) at the headwaters of Liuzigou, covering an area of approximately 185 hectares. The mountain consists largely of sandstone and shale, exhibiting unique geological formations. It is rich in mountain springs with abundant water sources, and densely forested, with forest coverage reaching about 70%.

Liuzigou Valley, located in Jinyuan District in the southern suburbs of Taiyuan, is part of the renowned scenic area Tianlong Mountain. A mountain stream runs through the valley, and local hiking enthusiasts in Taiyuan often treat trekking through Liuzigou as a regular outdoor activity.
