Taiyuan Art Museum

Taiyuan Art Museum is a key provincial and municipal cultural landmark project newly built by the Taiyuan Municipal People's Government. It is a non-profit, open, and permanent cultural institution supervised by the Taiyuan Municipal Bureau of Culture. This art museum undertakes the collection, preservation, display, and exhibition of artworks and documents, and utilizes artistic resources to provide educational programs, conduct academic research, engage in international exchanges, and offer leisure services.

Taiyuan Art Museum is located at the northeast corner of the Cultural Island in Taiyuan’s Changfeng Business District, covering a land area of 61,901 square meters with a total building area of 32,075 square meters, including 27,255 square meters above ground and 4,820 square meters underground. The architectural design consists of five floors partially above ground and one basement level. It was master-planned by renowned designer Professor Cohen from Harvard University and jointly designed by the American PSC Design Firm and the Southeast University Architectural Design Institute. The building’s form draws inspiration from the terraced fields characteristic of Shanxi’s Jinzhong region. Its layered steps and flowing curves blend seamlessly, creating a modern architectural structure that is both novel and rich in geometric tension. The museum houses ten exhibition halls of various sizes, including two first-tier and eight second-tier halls. Exhibition spaces vary in size and height, with the tallest hall reaching 13 meters. The exceptional scale, distinctive roof, and interplay of light and shadow together create an elegant temple of art. Additional facilities include a central lobby, a multi-functional academic lecture hall, meeting rooms, an art supermarket, training classrooms, mounting and framing rooms, conservation studios, an artists’ salon, a children’s art space, and a leisure café, all providing social services and recreational amenities.
