Wat Chalong

Wat Chalong is a Buddhist temple located on Green Lane in Chulia. Built in 1889, it is commonly known as the "Outer Temple" in contrast to the "Inner Temple" of Kanda Lam Temple. In 1934, Prince Svasti Sobhon, son of King Rama V Chulalongkorn of Thailand, named the temple "Wat Chalong." Legend has it that a gentle-natured woman who often wore a hairpin was a generous benefactor to the monks, and the temple was named after her adornment and character. In 1935, Prince Svasti Sobhon passed away, and his funeral was held here. Eight stone tablets are erected around the main shrine, inscribed with the 227 precepts of Buddhism. It is also said that the temple houses a sacred footprint stone of the Buddha, which continues to be venerated by Buddhists, making it the only temple in Penang with a Buddha footprint.
