Follow in the footsteps of the Father of the Nation and visit the century-old city of Penang

Penang is Malaysia’s second-largest city, boasting a wealth of historical landmarks that showcase diverse styles and flavors. Between 1906 and 1911, Father of the Nation Dr. Sun Yat-sen visited Penang five times and, together with the local Chinese community, planned the Huanghuagang Uprising—the revolutionary movement for change. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Dr. Sun’s historic meetings in Penang. Why not follow in his footsteps and explore the historic and cultural city of Penang?

During the British colonial period, Penang was developed as one of the earliest commercial centers in the Far East, blending the characteristics of Chinese, Malaysian, Dutch, Portuguese, and British cultures. To trace the Father of the Nation’s footsteps, be sure to visit "Yuyongzhuang" on Thieves’ Street. This was the secret base of the Tongmenghui (Chinese Revolutionary Alliance) in Penang from 1909 to 1911 and also served as the revolutionary headquarters of Southeast Asia. Stepping into Yuyongzhuang is like traveling back in time to 1911, when Dr. Sun Yat-sen delivered impassioned speeches, rallying revolutionaries and planning the Huanghuagang Uprising.

Additionally, Penang is home to numerous well-preserved, authentically styled buildings from the British colonial era, leaving a deep impression on visitors. The streets of George Town’s heritage core retain their old-world charm and were used as a filming location for director Ang Lee’s movie Lust, Caution. The City Hall of Penang is a classic European-style building from the 19th century, where many balls and concerts were once held, and it is recognized as one of the most beautiful colonial buildings in the world. Meanwhile, the Clock Tower of George Town, built in 1887 and combining British clock tower architecture with an Islamic Moorish dome, also tells the story of Malaysia’s multicultural heritage.
