The funeral of Argentine rider Jorge Boero
At around 8:00 PM Beijing time on January 1, the first day of the 2012 Dakar Rally brought tragic news as Argentine motorcyclist Jorge Martinez Boero tragically lost his life following a severe crash.
The first stage ran from Mar del Plata in Argentina to Santa Rosa de la Pampa, covering a total distance of 763 km, including a special stage of 57 km.
The 38-year-old Boero came from a racing family—his father was an Argentine rally champion who passed away in 2004. This was Boero’s second time competing in the event; he had to retire in the 6th stage last year. According to a statement released by the organizers, Boero’s crash occurred at 10:19 AM local time on January 1, at the 55 km mark of the first stage. The accident caused serious head and neck injuries. Although the rescue helicopter arrived within five minutes, it was unable to save his life, and he passed away en route to the hospital in Mar del Plata.
“The Dakar organizers express their deepest condolences to Boero’s family,” said a statement from the Dakar officials.
The Dakar Rally officially started on December 31, local time, and will conclude in Lima, Peru, on January 15. Known as the most dangerous motorsport event in the world, this is the fourth consecutive year the race has been held in South America. Prior to 2007, it took place in Africa but was canceled in 2008 due to safety concerns. Since 2009, it has been hosted in South America.
The second stage of this year’s race will be held on Monday, starting in Santa Rosa de la Pampa and finishing in San Rafael. It covers a total distance of 487 km, including a special stage of 295 km.
