Check-in desks and baggage carousels powered by solar energy — South Africa's airport goes green and eco-friendly

Is solar energy being used in airports, which are among the biggest energy consumers? Many people may be curious about this. According toLonely Planet website,George Airport in South Africa is the first in the country and the second in the world to operate on renewable energy, with power supplied through solar energy.

With a history of 30 years, George Airport handles about 7 million passengers annually. Thanks to solar energy utilization, it has reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 12.29 million kilograms last year, making it a truly green airport. The airport currently has 2,000 solar panels that generate 750,000 watts of electricity, mainly used for check-in counters, baggage carousels, and control towers, among other facilities. In fact, the airport also supplies solar power to nearby residents, benefiting around 250 households and 150,000 people.

The world’s first solar-powered airport is located in Kerala, India — Cochin International Airport — and South Africa is following in its footsteps. As the technology matures further, airports in the future may take on a whole new look.
