Fort Cornwallis

Introduction Located on the cape of George Town, it is said to be the place where Captain Light first arrived in Malaysia and began urban development in 1786. The fort was originally built of wood, and between 1805 and 1810, it was reconstructed with stone using convict labor. Today, the fort is mostly in ruins, with only a few old cannons still standing facing the sea. One of the most famous cannons is the Seri Rambai Cannon, which was made in the Netherlands in the 17th century. This cannon originally belonged to the Sultan of Johor under Dutch protection, was later seized by pirates, and eventually recaptured by the British. Locals believe this cannon has the power to grant fertility, so it’s common to see local women offering flowers to the cannon or around it. There is also a small memorial inside the fort, displaying a layout of the fort and some information about Sir Francis Light.   Admission/Fees & Opening Hours Admission: RM3.
